The surprize: or, the gentleman turn'd apothecary. A tale written originally in French prose; afterwards translated into Latin; and from thence now versified in hudibrastics.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Experience the birth of the modern novel, or compare the development of language using dictionaries and grammar discourses. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic re..

Apothecaries: Webster's Timeline History, 1292 - 2007

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Apothecaries," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Apothecaries in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Apothecaries when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other ph..

'Gratefull to Providence': The Diary and Accounts of Matthew Flinders, Surgeon, Apothecary and Man-Midwife, 1775-1802: Volume I: 1775-1784 ... (Publications of the Lincoln Record Society)

Matthew Flinders, surgeon and apothecary of Donington, in south Lincolnshire, in the late eighteenth century, was the father of the Matthew Flinders, sailor, navigator and explorer, and one of the central figures in the early history of the Australian nation. His diaries, published here in full for the first time, reveal a wealth of detail about the home, the family and the village in which the future explorer grew up. The daily routine of business, socialising with neighbours, unusual events such as the beaching of a whale near Boston, or the visit to Donington of Mr Powell the famous fire-eater are recorded alongside family joys and sorrows, the births and deaths of children, the passing of Flinders's beloved wife Susanna and his subsequent remarriage. The childhood and schooling of Matthew junior are a recurring theme, and the purchase of a two volume edition of Robinson Crusoe in 1782 gives a hint of things to come, though as the diaries reveal, his later career was a radical diver..

The Art of the Apothecary

Man has worshiped God since the days of Adam. In the time of Moses, a sacrificial system was instituted to appease and worship an awesome God. God has desired to be with His creation since these times and today, men are once again beginning to seek Him. The Art of the Apothecary is a book about the intimate worship of a holy creator that loves His creation. Learn, in this book, how God desires to be worshipped. The Apothecary

A dramatic novel exploring the lives of those caught up in the dreadful and arbitrary violence of World War II in Czernowitz, and its aftermath in Vienna. The Apothecary continues the story of the characters from The Walnut Tree, this time focusing on Felix. Like his sister Sussel, Felix is a pharmacist, and the book follows his life, and those of several other important characters, from the city of Czernowitz during the war years to Vienna in the 1960s. The forties are presented with the immediacy and reality that could only be supplied by someone who has lived this astonishing experience. Felix saves a young Jewish girl from being deported by the Russians, and procures the release of his own parents from cattle cars because a local Soviet official is in love with him. Then, when the German army moves in, Felix has to escape on his own, fleeing into the Caucasus Mountains to save his life. Twenty years on, Felix finds his childhood sweetheart, Martina, in Vienna, married to ..

The Apothecary's Chest: Magic, Art and Medication

'The Apothecary's Chest: Magic, Art and Medication' was a one-day symposium held at the University of Glasgow on November 24, 2007. The symposium called for a discussion on the evolution of the notions of mysticism, knowledge and superstition in the way they are intertwined in both science and the literary imagination in the figure of healers such as the apothecary, the alchemist, the shaman. There were three main areas of interest. The first involved traditional perceptions of physicians, who combined knowledge and superstition and thus bordered, in their practices, on the sphere of the occult. The second theme, evolving from the first, proposed an inquiry of the overlapping interests and processes of science, magic and prophesy, as well as of the implications and consequences of a privileged access to medical knowledge, while the third subject of discussion concentrated on the development of the symbolism of the healer in literature, history, philosophy of science, anthropology, theo..

The Apothecary Chest

You stand poised before an ancient Japanese apothecary cabinet. Time-darkened varnish hints at wisdom of unimaginable antiquity. Seventeen mysterious compartments promise revelations of obscure wisdom, insights of another age, or perhaps, merely the jest of an architect long since turned to dust. As in an archaeological treasure hunt, the results are often profound, sometimes mundane, occasionally profane, but invariably custodians of a perspective quite alien to the explorer. Physicist Hugh Everett III modeled a universe in which every decision point leads to a parallel version of reality. Through acts of volition, we create the illusion that only one version has substance, whereas in fact, all versions are equally real - just not for us. Linwood Steene has been warned: "To open this apothecary chest is to become disassociated in space and time." Nevertheless, he has elected to enter this bewildering, vertiginous realm - at the price of his eternal soul...
