Memoirs of the Botanic Garden at Chelsea: Belonging to the Society of Apothecaries of London (Cambridge Library Collection - Life Sciences)

Henry Field (1755-1837) was a British apothecary and member of the Society of Apothecaries of London. Besides serving in various administrative capacities for the Society, as well as for the London Annuity Society (founded by his father), he was nominated in 1831 as one of the medical officers for the City of London board of health, charged with taking precautions against an outbreak of cholera in the city. A lecturer and regular contributor to medical journals, Field is also the author of this history of the Chelsea Physic Garden, first published in 1820. The present reissue, published in 1878, was revised and extended by Robert Hunter Semple (1815-91). The garden was originally created by the Society as a professional resource in 1673 and the book covers its development up to 1878, and also includes a ground plan of the garden in that year...

The Apothecary's Ointment

The year is 1952. Selective Service and the military draft are uppermost in the minds of many eighteen to twenty-two year-olds. College students in good academic standing are granted deferments. Melvin Heath, a younger-ministerial student at Bradbury College has one. Driven by doubts about his ``calling to the ministry,'' Melvin drops out of college before the end of his fourth semester to join the U.S. Air Force. He sets out on a religious odyssey that takes him through military training, a rewarding tour of duty in Europe, a return to Bradbury College to resume his preparation for the seminary, disillusionment leading to a final break with Bradbury and the denomination, and his transfer to the engineering school of the state university to finish his education. His hunger for truth and understanding carries him along in his search for a resolution of the inner conflict that torments him...

The surprize: or, the gentleman turn'd apothecary. A tale written originally in French prose; afterwards translated into Latin; and from thence now versified in hudibrastics.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Western literary study flows out of eighteenth-century works by Alexander Pope, Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Frances Burney, Denis Diderot, Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. Apothecaries: Webster's Timeline History, 1292 - 2007

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Apothecaries," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Apothecaries in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Apothecaries when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other ph..

'Gratefull to Providence': The Diary and Accounts of Matthew Flinders, Surgeon, Apothecary and Man-Midwife, 1775-1802: Volume I: 1775-1784 ... (Publications of the Lincoln Record Society)

Matthew Flinders, surgeon and apothecary of Donington, in south Lincolnshire, in the late eighteenth century, was the father of the Matthew Flinders, sailor, navigator and explorer, and one of the central figures in the early history of the Australian nation. His diaries, published here in full for the first time, reveal a wealth of detail about the home, the family and the village in which the future explorer grew up. The daily routine of business, socialising with neighbours, unusual events such as the beaching of a whale near Boston, or the visit to Donington of Mr Powell the famous fire-eater are recorded alongside family joys and sorrows, the births and deaths of children, the passing of Flinders's beloved wife Susanna and his subsequent remarriage. The childhood and schooling of Matthew junior are a recurring theme, and the purchase of a two volume edition of Robinson Crusoe in 1782 gives a hint of things to come, though as the diaries reveal, his later career was a radical diver..
